Please add us to your readers as http://ccesmedia.wordpress.com/ - I made the change as Blogger would not let me add any more pictures to posts. Hope to see you at the new blog! Thanks!Holly DuBoishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15770035579386398593noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2468651679647590146.post-11920873168653253262012-12-07T11:36:00.001-05:002012-12-07T11:36:03.931-05:00We have moved!Unfortunately, I recently learned that this blog has a finite amount of space for images! If you have any ideas on how to fix that (without subscribing), please let me know! In the meantime, I will be posting at this site instead. Please follow me on over, but if we can get this one back up, I will be back at this address. Thank you all for reading! As Thanksgiving approaches, I took the opportunity to use the Super 3 with first graders to learn more about wild turkeys. To show them how to use a variety of information sources, we observed them in this 1 minute clip from ARKive, read about them on this website, and looked them up in an online encyclopedia (we used Amazing Animals from Grolier through NC Wise Owl.) After gathering information, I asked the kids to draw a turkey and write four facts they learned on the tail feathers. They did a great job! Here are some of their pictures/facts. I hope you can read the facts because they did a good job remembering a lot of neat stuff like they sleep in low branches, can have up to 18 eggs, use their feathers to attract females, the skin on their head can change colors (which I didn't know!), and they eat seeds and insects. You can also see some of the information they gathered in details they have in their pictures. Great job first graders!

After a lesson comparing Pilgrim life almost 400 years ago with our lives today, I wanted to add on to that knowledge with a comparison between Wampanoag and Pilgrim life. I pulled together images of things like Pilgrim houses, clothes, cooking methods, etc and the same for Wampanoag houses and such. Then, we folded a paper and drew pictures to represent each side of life. I got all of the images from Creative Commons. Here are just a couple of the images I used to show them what life looked like:

Source

Source

Source

On a side note, Creative Commons is a great source for images. If you search this way, most images that come up have granted permission to use them. Some have certain restrictions such as attribution, share alike, or not for commercial use, so make sure you check for that and make sure what you are using it for fits in those parameters. I use it all the time to jazz up my SMART notebooks and to show students images that add to what we are learning, and it is a great source for images for student projects also.

But back to this lesson, here are some of the end results from the Kindergarteners.
You can also see what the journey here was like and see more about the first Thanksgiving feast. (They also have virtual field trips you can sign up for - last year it was sort of like an interview with a couple of the Pilgrims and Wampanoags. I thought it was interesting, but the older language style made it harder for the kids.)

We started with a Super 3 review and brainstormed questions we had about the Pilgrims and where we could find more information. I focused just on the Pilgrims daily life section with this lesson and had the students compare life then with their life now. Then, we did a sort on the smartboard with items the Pilgrims used then and things the kids use now. If we have time, I might do the same thing with the Wampanoag side of the site. The kids had fun and liked the site because they use photographs of people dressed in the time period clothes. If you have not used this site before, make sure you check it out!
But first, let me catch you up.

I have been working with 2nd grade on animal research. We spent two classes researching the animals, then we made a powerpoint. Here are some of the examples they have done. I have to point out how great they did with including the citations like we talked about! All the pictures are from clip art in powerpoint.
Then, today the network crashed and we were without computers - they could not save, they could not go on the internet, I could not even open my SMART notebooks, so I had to do some quick adjustments. Instead of doing powerpoint, we did a paper slide. The kids did a great job working together and most of them finished or almost finished in one class! It is amazing how reliant we can become on technology, but the kids still adapt so well. Here are some of the results from today - they have the same elements as the powerpoints above with facts, a picture of the animal in its habitat, and a citation.
The first grade group came today to start their powerpoint with the graphic organizer we had already filled out. They are making one slide for each question on the organizer. They did such a fantastic job! They worked together, took turns typing, got way more done than I thought they would, and are excited about the project. Tomorrow, they will be back to finish typing and add colors, pictures, etc. Here are some pictures of them working on the research portion. We spent one day using books and one day using an online encyclopedia through NC Wise Owl.
If you are interested in reading more about him, check out some of the books in our library about him, his job, and his family! We also have a lot of books about elections, government jobs, and other branches of government. Have fun reading!
We started a plant project in late September with third grade. Because there are so many classes (eight this year!) it has taken us a little longer to finish, but they presented at the end of October. Each class was divided into partners and assigned a plant. They were to use the Big 6 process to research the plant, create a powerpoint, and present it to the class. Last year, we did the same sort of project with odd plants, but with a change in online encyclopedia options, we had to change them up this year and went with more plants that help people somehow - either as an herb, a fast growing food for animals, fire deterrent, or some other use. I was happy with what most of them came up with for their first big research project in the Big 6. (I use Super 3 with K-2.) Here are some of their powerpoint slides. They were asked to choose a color that represented their plant and to include their citation for their information. All of their pictures were from clip art.
Our 4th grade team did a fantastic job last week of holding a mock election for the student body. Two weeks ago, each student came to the gym and "registered" to vote, then last week they came back, checked in, and voted for the next president using a picture ballot. Each class was assigned one or two states to represent. Then, in an all-school assembly, the electoral votes were tallied as each "state" announced their classroom victor. Here is a news story a local news channel did on the mock election. It was a great learning experience for the kids and they had a lot of fun doing it. The winner? Based on our electoral votes, it will be Mitt Romney, but we will see if they were correct tomorrow. No matter who you vote for - be sure you vote!
Yesterday, I was working with a third grade class. They were finishing up a powerpoint to present in our next session, and I had 3 sets of partners done while the rest still had a ways to go. I told the ones that were done they could be my helpers and circulate to answer and assist with the things they knew but to refer questions they didn't know the answer to back to me. It made things so much easier! Kids didn't have to wait for me to get to them when the students could answer simple questions like how to insert a picture and change the background because they already did it. I know it seems a simple enough thing I should have thought of long ago, but I will definitely be using this strategy again. It might even encourage students to focus and finish faster so they can be a helper.

What do you do when some students finish earlier than others?Holly DuBoishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15770035579386398593noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2468651679647590146.post-52174643436209857912012-10-26T12:27:00.000-04:002012-10-26T12:27:00.168-04:00Bee-Ware of a Fun ProjectI did a Super 3 bee lesson with my Kindergarteners right before book fair last week, and it actually worked out playing into the pumpkin lesson I am doing now. (More on that one later!)

I wanted to introduce the Super 3 Research Process to them, and used bees as an example of an animal that gets ready for winter during the fall. (They make extra honey to store.) I like to use the Super 3 as a backbone for lots of lessons throughout the year so the kids get used to hearing it, how to follow the process, and can kind of know what to expect from a lot of lessons, though the topics and end products change.

We brainstormed questions we had about bees, where to find the information, and how we could show information. Then, we read a non fiction book about bees and made observations from some bee photographs. The kids drew a picture of a bee using the things we observed and tried to write something they had learned about bees if they could. They turned out well and some added some good details to the pictures like the honeycomb cells or bees on flowers getting nectar. Here are some of their pictures.
We talked about where we could find more information about pumpkins and several were thoughtful enough to include pumpkin farmers along with the usual books, computer, smart phone, etc. We looked at photos of different stages of the pumpkin life cycle and watched a short clip of a pumpkin growing. I like to also read the book Pumpkin Jack, but it was already checked out this year when I looked for it.

We talked about the steps and how a cycle repeats. It also helped to explain why the pumpkins are green for a while by comparing them with tomatoes and bananas that are green before they are ripe.

I had the Kindergarteners shorten the cycle to 4 steps of the life cycle and their end products looked something like these.
Our Fall Book Fair is almost here! We will have Book Fair Oct 15th-19th. We will be open daily from 8:15-3:45 and on Oct. 19th during the school Croctoberfest Fall Festival as well. Please come and shop! A portion of the proceeds comes back to our school to help us buy more books for the library. We also need volunteers if you are available!

If you cannot come and shop or have family out of town that would like to buy a book, be sure to visit our book fair webpage. This is also a great way to get books for your child for Christmas without them knowing! You can order books online for the same price as in the fair and they will be delivered to the school with NO shipping charges. These purchases still count toward our school. You can also shop longer online - the online fair is open Oct. 8th - Oct. 27th. All books will be delivered to the school shortly afterwards and I will deliver them to the kids as soon as they arrive. If you want them to be a Christmas present surprise, just email me and let me know how to contact you to pick them up.

Additionally, for all the Diary of a Wimpy Kid fans out there, the 7th DWK book is coming out Nov. 13th, but you can preorder it at our book fair. Then, when it is released, they will be shipped here and delivered to your classroom by me! In the past, the book fair paperback is usually cheaper than the hardback that will be released elsewhere and it helps our school. The book is $8.49 plus tax if you wish to preorder, you will pay at the book fair and we have a short order form for it.

Remember to check our book fair webpage! You can order books that we sell out of or ask family if they would like to purchase a book from your child's wish list. Don't forget to order a book for your student's teacher as well - they make great Christmas presents.
With all the talk of Big Bird ads these days, I thought this was interesting and could start many different discussions in the classroom at any level. On the Library of Congress blog today, they mentioned a collection of Presidential Campaign Posters. Looking through them, there are some interesting ones that show signs of the times and the progression from simple to much more like current advertising. I could see many discussions ranging from who the ads are meant to target, what they reflect about the time period, changes over time, and more. The LoC is a great resource for primary source material such as this, so don't forget to check it when you are working on projects for audio, graphic, written, photographic, or other materials to make your lessons even more personal.

How have you used the Library of Congress or primary sources?

I was lucky enough to be able to attend the NCSLMA 2012 Conference. This is a wonderful time to be able to recharge, get excited about what I do, and find lots of great new ideas! I will be posting about many of the ideas I got at some point or another, either over the next few weeks, or as I use some of them in my own lessons, so you get to have some of the ideas too. I highly recommend going to at least one state conference (or national if you can) each year if you can make it. It is a great way to connect with other colleagues, find new ideas, and just stop to think about the direction of your own program. I will be posting some of the ideas as I said, but I want to hear from you - let's have a virtual conference!

It just goes to show that you never know what a student can really do! I have since seen several other articles about John Gurdon, but he has won the Nobel Prize for Medicine. However, he was apparently told in school that "His work has been far from satisfactory," the teacher wrote. "If he
can't learn simple biological facts he would have no chance of doing the
work of a specialist, and it would be sheer waste of time, both on his
part, and of those who have to teach him." according to the AP News article. This is a good reminder that even if students are not showing interest or skill in area, that doesn't mean they never will and we should continue to work with them and encourage their dreams. I admit I am a big Rick Riordan fan. I finished Mark of Athena this weekend already and now have to wait a whole year for the next one! I love that some of my kids are big fans of his also though. A group of them have checked out all of his books and love to get them at book fair. I was beyond excited for them when Bookmarks emailed me to ask if we might want 4 free student tickets to give away for a Rick Riordan event at Wake Forest University last Friday night.

Yes, please!

I talked to our fifth grade teachers and curriculum coordinator to decide how to give away the tickets. We settled on having the interested students write a letter about why they wanted to win the ticket. I chose 4 students and it was the highlight of my day to tell them they won! They were so excited and I passed out the tickets. One student's dad was kind enough to send me a couple of pictures from the event. I was hoping they would get to meet Mr. Riordan, but he had pre-signed the books. They did get to submit questions and enjoyed his talk though.
Learn NC is a fantastic and probably underutilized resource! There are so many things there you could not even list them all - lesson plans, online professional development, new teacher support, field trip suggestions, and so much more. I recently found where they have take Common Core and NC Essential Standards and added lesson plan links. While I have not looked at other areas much yet, I have spent a little time on the Information and Technology Essential Standards. It is such a great way to get ideas! I have not seen any that I will do just as they are written yet, but it has given me several springboards to ideas that I will tweak to use with my classes. I have also found a lot of resources I didn't know about through the lesson plans.
Our fourth graders are working on learning about the Lost Colony in North Carolina, so they asked if I could work with the kids on learning about Sir Walter Raleigh a bit more in depth. I decided to use this as an opportunity to also work with the kids on finding important information in an article and creating timelines. We started off as a group and I modeled adding a couple of dates. Then, we talked about how to add events that were important, but didn't have a specific date in the article by locating what other events came before or after and making a best guess where it might fall on the timeline. The timelines also helped the kids think about numbers when we talked about having to estimate where the years would fall on the timeline, rather than just putting them anywhere, why there might be a long space at the beginning with no events, and how they begin and end unless the person is still alive. This was also a good way for the kids to break an article down into important events. I am thinking about maybe using the timelines next time to create a project of some sort, but have not decided what yet. (Edited below to add our follow up!) Here are some of the kids working on reading the articles and creating their timelines.

I am preparing a unit for my 5th graders on explorers and was looking for sites to add to my livebinder for them to use to research their person. I came across Explorers A to Z and it looked like a great site! Looking a little closer, I realized it will be a great site...but not for the reason I thought. Instead of using it for our explorer unit, I will be adding it to my website evaluation unit - on my list of hoax sites. You can see more about the Explorer A to Z site here and how it is meant to be used. They have even color coded the Treasure Hunts for facts by easier with more surface level fact problems to harder, more fact specific issues so you can challenge kids at the level you want. The Treasure Hunts give a real site to visit and their own fake one so they can compare the information.

This is a perfect site to use along with sites like the Northwest Tree Octopus in helping students learn more about how to look at a site and that just because it looks legit, doesn't mean the information is correct. As I was reading about Christopher Columbus, I thought at first they made some typos, because I know he didn't sail in 1942, but of course he didn't have infomercials or a toll free phone number either. Hopefully, kids would catch these things, but then again I was surprised how many still thought the Northwest Tree Octopus was real even after really exploring the website.

I am starting with my fifth graders and may work down to younger grades in the future, but I don't know yet. We spent our time going over what a wiki is, how and when you might use a wiki, examples of a wiki, and cyber safety and etiquette. This video was a really helpful introduction for them. (The previous link will take you to the video on TeacherTube, it is also on YouTube, but can't be embedded.)

We also discussed the roles in a wiki - editor, writer, and reader. The
students are so far starting out as readers who can read and comment,
but can't edit pages yet. As the year goes on, we may increase the role
to writer so they can really get a feel for the point of a wiki, but I wanted them to practice with cyber etiquette a bit first. I am hoping to use this wiki
for a few things this year - as an exit ticket sometimes at the end of a
class, as a place for students to post book requests, and a place to
post book reviews. We may also use it for group work collaboration if we
get to the point of becoming writers. Here are some of kids commenting
on the wiki.
My kids always use the phrase "back in the day" when they are trying to ask me where books about earlier time periods are, I guess that must be a popular phrase among grandparents in the area maybe? Anyway, it popped into my head this morning when I saw this post on the Library of Congress blog for teachers. (Which, by the way, if you are not following, you should! There are so many resources there that you don't know about or forget about!)

The post was about their online Day by Day jukebox, which I had not seen before. You can choose any date ( I think the default is today's date) and see recording from many years in the past available to play online. What a great addition to calendar time in the mornings, music class, math lessons (how many years ago was this recorded, what is the beat, etc.), social studies (time periods in history), etc. Those are just the first ideas that popped into my head. The first recording for today is from 1905.
If using the Day by Day feature is not what works best for you, you can also search by several different methods including by artist, genre, playlist, etc. There is a brief First Time Here review also. This would allow you to use it as more of a unit. For example, we talk about Marian Anderson with Black History Month and there are several recordings here by her, so you can let students actually hear her singing.
How could you use this in your classroom? We did a similar project last year, but this year we are not doing unusual plants. I am trying to build in the Big 6 and Super 3 more often with my classes so the information will hopefully travel with them year to year as they get more used to hearing it and doing it. So, we are using the Big 6 process to research plants. They will be taking notes, compiling their information, and creating a powerpoint about their plants. We have just started working on note taking and discussing that notes should be important key words, not whole sentences. Here are some of the kids getting started.
Our state is kind enough to fund several resources through NC Wise Owl, so we are using the Britannica encyclopedia through that to read about their assigned plant. They are working with a partner. I can't wait to see what their finished products look like!

Holly DuBoishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15770035579386398593noreply@blogger.com0
